EXERCISE CAUTION WHEN USING YOUR GPS

Scientists have verified and corroborated a 2006 warning that recent increase in the Sun’s solar activities could disrupt satellite communications, such as the popular Global Positioning System (GPS) employed by millions of drivers worldwide.

According to BBC News, the sun is reaching a new solar maximum – a period of elevated surface activity and radiation. That radiation, which is commonly known to the public as solar flares, affects Earth’s ionosphere, and will likely cause delays of satellite communications transmissions to the ground.

As a result, it is expected that the GPS system may have an error rate of 10 metres, and this is in open areas. In urbanized areas, the error rate could go up even further.

We urge drivers to exercise caution when using their GPS systems.
