Honda Motor Company is recalling 304,000 vehicles globally for air-bags that may inflate with too much pressure in a crash, send metal and plastic pieces flying and cause injuries or deaths.

Honda said there have been 20 reported cases of this malfunction causing injuries accidents so far related to this problem, including two deaths in 2009  - both in the U.S

The Japanese automaker is also checking an additional 603,000 vehicles that may have received the faulty parts in collision repairs

Below are the models affected on this recall that were manufactured in 2001 and 2002.:

• Accord – Model Year 2001-2002
• Civic – Model Year 2001-2003 (2-door and 4-door model)
• Odyssey  – Model Year 2002-2003
• Pilot – Model Year 2001-2003
• CR-V – Model Year 2003
• Acura 3.2 CL – Model Year 2003
• Acura 3.2 TL – Model Year 2002-2003
• Other Models (not yet specified at this time of writing)

Cars under recall were sold in the US, Canada, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore and other locations, Honda said.

The recall spans 273,000 vehicles in the U.S. some 27,000 in Canada, nearly 2,000 vehicles in Japan and another 2,000 in other countries. There were also 359 vehicles in Europe with 200 in Germany, one in Great Britain, and 158 in Israel, according to Honda.

The latest recall is an extension of recalls for the same problem in 2008, and again carried out in 2009, as well as last year, covering about 950,000 vehicles.

According to Tokyo-based Honda, the recall now covers about two million vehicles worldwide.

Hajime Kaneko, Honda spokesman, said that the cause for the latest recall was the use of incorrect material in the chemical used to deploy air bags.

Initial cause of the recall was excessive moisture in the inflator propellant, which is part of what inflates the air bag, he said.

According to him, that problem was eventually found later to affect more vehicles than initially estimated, as incidents didn’t stop, and the recall was expanded to account for the possibility that the problem was caused by a defective stamping machine used during production.

Hajime Kaneko said that Honda is ‘extremely sorry’ about the recalls but believes the problem has now been taken care of, with no more recalls linked to this problem expected.

Also included in the latest recall are 912 air-bag service parts sold for installation in vehicles for collision repair and other reasons.

Older cars are also key targets due to their worn-out locks which make it easier to thieves to break into the car. A number of common stealing trends noted were the use of a remote control which copies the vehicle’s locking system or towing the car away.

Statistics show that out of 987 vehicles stolen, 85 of these were cars in 2010. Whereas in 2009, there was a total of 1,115 number of vehicles stolen, 89 out of these are cars. 2008 had the most number of car thefts which is 94 out of 1,178 vehicles stolen.

It was said that Toyota Cars are mostly susceptible to theft because of their popularity and overseas export quality where their parts can be removed and sold separately. Car owners were advised by the Police to park their car on secured places and install or have security devices like anti-theft alarm to prevent such crimes in the future.

One car theft instance that was reported was last month, where the owner parked his Toyota Vios at the third storey of a multi-storey carpark in McNair Road in the Boon Keng area. The said car was parked at 8am and unfortunately was found missing when the owner returned at the same night.
